PHARE - Introduction to OpenGIS (UNIPHORM, 1998)
Aims:
The project addressed the problem with the provision of a
web-based distance learning service for the open GIS environment aimed at
technical staff. The main characteristics of the project were:

a web based service for delivery of materials,
interactive use of GIS, student support and interaction, dissemination of
best practice and a forum for students, academics, vendors and the business
and commerical sectors which complements the OGIS forum

an underlying generic, modular curriculum which is
platform and software independent

work with EU base data, conformance with EU data
standards and links to established EU projects
-
on-line presentation and support based on latest web
technology
-
a system of credit rating and transfer
- a continuous professional development programme and award multi-lingual
presentation and support.

Outcomes:
The multimedia distance education course aiming knowledge and practical skills on OpenGIS. The course length is 8 weeks
with an equivalent of 80-hour distance learning followed by a 5-day training.
